UAE to bid farewell to 2G network

The UAE has announced plans to shut down its 2G mobile network.

It will be phased out by the end of 2022, as the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) allocates more resources for strengthening the 5G network.

All those who are likely to be affected by the shutdown will be supported by the UAE’s service providers.

2G was activated in the country back in 1994, and it’s still effective despite mobile networks now moving up to 5G.

"Today, we are on the threshold of a new era characterised by comprehensive digital transformation, Internet of Things and smart city, where a faster, stronger and more capable network is needed to withstand the communication between vast numbers of devices," said Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, the TRA's Director General.
