The UAE has strongly condemned the attempted assassination of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, and expressed solidarity with the country.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation denounced such "criminal acts that aim to destabilise security and stability, and are inconsistent with humanitarian values and principle".

Khan was shot in the leg on Thursday when his anti-government protest convoy came under attack in the city of Wazirabad.

Khan was out of danger according to physician Faisal Sultan, who is also the head of Lahore hospital where the former premier was being treated. He told journalists that initial scans and x-rays showed bullet fragments in Khan's leg.

Pakistan's Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said a suspect had been arrested.
