The UAE has expressed its solidarity with Uganda and the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) following a military helicopter crash near an airport in Mogadishu, which resulted in a number of deaths and injuries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) extended its sincere condolences and sympathy to the victims' families, the government and the people of Uganda over this tragedy, as well as its wishes for a speedy recovery for all the injured.

According to Reuters, five passengers were killed aboard the Ugandan military helicopter involving mission personnel, which carried eight occupants.

Another three of the helicopter's occupants survived the incident but with severe injuries and burns, said spokesperson Felix Kulayigye.

The impact of the crash had caused munitions on board to detonate, destroying nearby structures and injuring three civilians, he said.
