The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced a midday break for workers will start on June 15 and prohibits any work under direct sunlight and in open-air areas across the UAE between 12:30pm and 3:00pm, until September 15.

MoHRE said on its website that the break is a, "cornerstone of the country's labour market legislation" and "aims to provide a safe working environment that adheres to best practices and standards of occupational health and safety, protecting workers against injuries that may result from working in high temperatures during the summer months."

Companies face fines starting from AED 5,000 for each employee found working between these hours, up to AED 50,000 if several staff are working during the specified time.

MoHRE confirmed that some jobs will be exempt from the ruling, such as those involving water supply or electricity and road works.

It's the 20th consecutive year the rule has been put in place.
