Dubai trials drones to clean metro, tram stations

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has launched a drone-powered cleaning trial for metro and tram station facades, marking a major step toward innovation and sustainability in public transport maintenance.

In partnership with Keolis MHI, the operator of Dubai Metro and Tram, the RTA is testing drone technology as a safer, more efficient alternative to traditional cleaning methods.

The new system cuts manpower requirements by over 50 per cent, as it operates with a smaller team of 8 people, compared to the traditional method requiring up to 15 personnel per station.

It also reduces the need for workers to operate at dangerous heights, while also using less water, aligning with Dubai’s environmental goals.

The RTA says the initiative is part of a broader push to adopt smart solutions that optimise resources and support a greener future.

The drone trial is already delivering promising results, and officials are exploring a hybrid model that combines drones with conventional cleaning methods for greater flexibility and impact.
