Dubai Customs has intercepted 223 live animals hidden inside an abandoned suitcase at Dubai International Airport in a major wildlife trafficking case.
Officers became suspicious after an unattended piece of luggage was flagged during routine screening.
When inspectors opened the suitcase, they discovered dozens of animals concealed inside, including 129 lizards, 36 scorpions, eight snakes and 50 frogs.
Authorities say several of the species may be protected under international wildlife trade regulations governed by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
Dubai Customs coordinated with the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to ensure the animals received proper care and that all legal and environmental procedures were followed.
Officials say the seizure highlights the growing threat of wildlife trafficking, one of the world's most lucrative forms of organised environmental crime.
They add that advanced screening technology, risk management systems and highly trained inspection teams continue to play a critical role in protecting the UAE's borders, biodiversity and natural resources.
Dubai Customs described the operation as another successful effort to combat illegal wildlife trade and reinforce the emirate's position as a secure global hub for travel and commerce.
Dubai Customs successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle 223 live animals, including lizards, scorpions, snakes and frogs, concealed inside an unclaimed suitcase at Dubai International Airport.
