A major blaze in central Spain has stabilised, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said on Wednesday, in a rare reprieve as soaring temperatures in France and Spain increased the threat from wildfires in both countries.

Two Greek firefighters died on Wednesday as they battled a blaze on the island of Crete as wildfires spread further in Europe, despite a rare reprieve in Spain, where a major fire stabilised.

Saudia Arabia announced in the early hours of Wednesday morning it had launched targeted strikes on Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq, in coordination with US Central Command (CENTCOM).
