HBO's Harry Potter TV series unveils lead cast

After an "extraordinary search," HBO has unveiled the lead cast of the TV adaptation of JK Rowling's beloved book series, Harry Potter.

Dominic McLaughlin will take on the iconic role of Harry Potter, with Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. All three are screen newcomers.

In a joint statement, showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, who will also serve as an executive producer, said: "After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione and Ron.

"The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”

The series promises to be a faithful adaptation of Rowling’s book series, with each season dedicated to one book. It will stream exclusively on HBO Max, including in upcoming launch markets such as Germany, Italy and the UK. The original film adaptations will remain available for viewers globally.

The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. Other executive producers include Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films, in partnership with Warner Bros. Television.
