Dubai awards AED 1.4 billion contracts for stormwater infrastructure

Dubai is stepping up its stormwater drainage infrastructure, with Dubai Municipality awarding contracts worth AED 1.43 billion for four major projects under the 'Tasreef' initiative.

The upgrades are part of a major effort to enhance the emirate’s stormwater network — making it more efficient, sustainable and flood-resilient.

Key areas set to benefit include Nad Al Hamar, the vicinity of Dubai International Airport, Al Garhoud, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, Zabeel, Jumeirah and Al Wasl.

More than 36 km of new drainage lines will be added, connecting to the main Tasreef tunnel, which will ultimately connect drainage systems across the emirate.

The network’s total drainage capacity in the target areas will increase significantly, which will reduce operating and maintenance costs while providing higher service standards to residents and businesses.

Dubai Municipality’s Acting Director General, Marwan bin Ghalita, says the project will boost drainage capacity by 700 per cent over the next 100 years, while cutting operational costs by 20 per cent.

The total investment in the Tasreef project stands at AED 30 billion — making it Dubai’s largest stormwater infrastructure initiative to date.
