UAE steps up support for Sudanese refugees in Uganda

The UAE has provided 30,000 relief food packages to Sudanese refugees at the Kiryandongo Refugee Camp in Uganda.

This initiative, which aims to assist up to 100,000 people in need, is part of the second phase of the UAE’s humanitarian aid campaign for Sudanese refugees, launched in April 2024.

The distribution of the food packages was overseen by UAE Ambassador to Uganda, Abdalla Hassan Al Shamsi, along with senior Ugandan officials and local leaders.

Al Shamsi praised the UAE's ongoing commitment to supporting Sudanese refugees and emphasized the importance of international solidarity in times of crisis.

This food relief is part of a larger pledge by the UAE to provide $100 million in aid for Sudanese humanitarian efforts, announced earlier this year at the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan in Paris.

Al Shamsi expressed hope that this support would make a meaningful impact on Sudanese families, including women and children, living in refugee camps in Uganda and other neighbouring countries, until peace is restored in Sudan.

Uganda's Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, also commended the UAE's contribution, highlighting it as part of the country's broader commitment to humanitarian aid and development efforts to alleviate the suffering of refugees.

In addition to the immediate food aid, the UAE's humanitarian plan includes future development projects, such as drilling eight water wells and building 16 health facilities in the Kiryandongo camp, to improve the living conditions of Sudanese refugees.
