A five-member gang has been arrested in Dubai for stealing bank details using fake web links of popular restaurants and delivery companies with promises of huge discounts.
Dubai Police's Anti-Fraud Centre said the gang convinced the victims to "click on the link and enter their banking information". And, once that was completed, they would use the data to withdraw funds.
A specialised team from Dubai Police started monitoring the "suspicious online activities" of the gang following numerous complaints from victims.
The pattern of messages were analysed, leading to the identification of the gang members.
The men were detained and all electronic gadgets used in the crime seized.
Dubai Police have reminded residents to avoid clicking on links from suspicious sources, and to always check for their authenticity.
The public has also been encouraged to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the ‘Police Eye’ feature on the Dubai Police App and the eCrime platform.
