WTA Finals: Andreescu and Halep face off for first time

US Open winner Bianca Andreescu and Wimbledon champion Simona Halep are set to meet for the first time at the season-ending WTA Finals at Shenzhen.

They will play on Monday in the Purple Group, which also includes world number two Karolina Pliskova and defending champion Elina Svitolina.

Meanwhile, top seed Ashleigh Barty fought from a set down to grab an opening victory over Belinda Bencic on Sunday. 

The Australian’s 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 win means she is set to seal the year-end world number one ranking for the first time.

In the other Red Group match, third seed Naomi Osaka won her opener against Petra Kvitova 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
