West Indies defeat England to lift second World T20 title

A four-six blitz from Carlos Brathwaite helped catapult West Indies to the World Twenty20 title on Sunday. But the 27-year-old attributed his team's success to man-of-the-match Marlon Samuels, who scored 85. "Today Marlon Samuels took responsibility right away and played a fantastic knock," Brathwaite said. "He did it in 2012 and I knew as long as he was there at the end he would bring us home again in 2016." England's Joe Root scored 54 to give his team a meager 155-9. West Indies had a paltry start at just 11-3, but left it to the final over to defeat England, needing 19 runs from Ben Stokes. Brathwaite smashed four consecutive sixes to end on 34 off 10 balls. Darren Sammy credited his team for the victory, but slammed the West Indian cricket board in an emotional outburst post-win. "We had lots of issues, people wondered whether we would play this tournament," he said. "We felt disrespected by our board. Mark Nicholas (the English commentator) described us as a team with no brains. All these things before the tournament just brought this team together. "I want to really thank these 15 men. The ability to put all that adversity aside and to play this type of cricket in front of such passionate fans is just tremendous," he said. This is the Caribbean side's second World Twenty20 championship, the only team to have done so in the tournament's history.
