UAE goes down fighting in World Cup qualifier

The UAE suffered a setback in the AFC World Cup third round qualifiers on Thursday, with a 1-0 loss to Iran.

Iran's Mehdi Taremi netted a late goal in Dubai’s Al Wasl Stadium, cementing their place at the top of the group with nine points.

Earlier, South Korea edged Syria 2-1 and Iraq played out a 0-0 draw with Lebanon.

The UAE will face Iraq again at Zabeel Stadium in Dubai.
