Shubman Gill fined for social media posts after controversial dismissal

Indian batsman Shubman Gill has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching an ICC Code of Conduct, which prohibits "public criticism of, or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match".

Additionally, Gill's disciplinary record now includes one demerit point. This marks his first offence within a 24-month period.

There was controversy during the World Test Championship final played at The Oval when Gill was caught by Cameron Green at the gully, which lead to a long examination by third umpire Richard Kettleborough resulting in his dismissal.

Gill looked upset at the decision on the field and after the day's play took to social media to take a dig at the officials sharing screenshots of the catch, which showed the ball may have touched the ground.

The swashbuckling batsman's sarcastic posts have not been taken kindly by the ICC.

The final day saw a dramatic Indian batting collapse resulting in a crushing 209-run defeat on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has imposed fines on India and Australia for their slow over-rates during the final. India has been fined 100 per cent of their match fee, while Australia faces an 80 per cent fine for failing to maintain the required pace of play.

Richie Richardson, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, imposed the sanctions after determining that India fell five overs short of the target, even after accounting for time allowances. Australia, on the other hand, was found to be four overs behind.

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, teams are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for each over not bowled within the allotted time.

Both captains, Rohit Sharma of India and Pat Cummins of Australia, pleaded guilty to the charges and accepted the proposed sanctions. This eliminated the need for formal hearings in the matter.
