Manchester United’s poor start to the Premier League season continued with a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, increasing the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
Captain Bruno Fernandes was left out of the starting line-up after criticising Carrick’s tactics following the 4-1 Champions League loss to Como in midweek.
Bournemouth took the lead through Rayan in the 38th minute before Marcus Tavernier made it 2-0 shortly before half-time. Evanilson added a third after the break as supporters began leaving Old Trafford early.
The result leaves United 16th in the table on seven points, just one above the relegation zone, and without a league win since beating Ipswich Town 5-2 on August 30.
Carrick said afterwards that he did not know what would happen next, but insisted he would continue to do his best for the club.
Stand-in captain Harry Maguire said the players needed to take responsibility, adding they were “not doing enough” as individuals.
Liverpool enjoyed a much better afternoon, beating Brighton 2-0 at Anfield for their first home league win of the season.
Pascal Gross diverted a Florian Wirtz effort into his own net before Alexander Isak scored four minutes later. The victory lifts Liverpool to fourth, one point behind Brighton.
Manchester City remain top of the standings despite losing 2-1 to Aston Villa on Saturday, while Newcastle beat Crystal Palace 2-0 and Hull drew 1-1 with Brentford.
