The Gunners suffered a 3-1 defeat away to French side Rennes in the first leg of their last-16 match, while Chelsea outclassed Dynamo Kiev 3-0 and Napoli beat Red Bull Salzburg 3-0.
In other games, Villarreal were 3-1 winners away at Zenit St Petersburg, Sevilla were held 2-2 by Slavia Prague and Valencia overcame Krasnodar 2-1.
Elsewhere, Dinamo Zagreb registered a 1-0 home win over Benfica, while in the clash of former champions, Eintracht Frankfurt and Inter Milan played out a goalless draw.
