Archaeologists discover Roman-era artefact in Sharjah

Sharjah’s Archaeological Authority (SAA) has discovered a new artefact that dates back to the Roman Empire in the first century AD.

The artefact is a bronze statue of a mythical creature with eagle wings, a lion’s head, and a huge bird’s foot with claws.

It is thought to be a part of a censer bearing three statues of similar shape and distributed in a symmetrical circular shape, topped by a large and luxurious bowl used for burning incense.

The item was found in Mleiha, which portrays the existence of a trading network between the Sharjah area and ancient empires in the past.

These discoveries highlight the important activities carried out by the SAA and enhances Sharjah’s position on the world’s archaeological map.
