Donald Trump has become the third US President to be impeached by the House of Representatives, with a Senate trial to decide whether he will remain in office or not.

This places Trump alongside Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, the only two other presidents in the nation's history to be impeached.

The two impeachment charges against Trump are abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The vote fell along party lines with most Democrats voting for the charges and all Republicans voting against them.

The House voted 230-197 for the first charge, abuse of power, and 229-198 for the second charge, obstruction of Congress.

The case, sent to Senate for trial, is expected to start next month.
