Security Council reaffirms support for GCC security, sovereignty

The United Nations Security Council has reaffirmed its strong commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Gulf Cooperation Council member states, while praising their role in supporting regional and international peace.

The statement was issued during a special high-level briefing at the UN headquarters in New York, chaired by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani.

Council members commended the Gulf Cooperation Council for its contributions to stability, including mediation efforts, preventive diplomacy and support for humanitarian and peacekeeping operations.

The Council also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation between the UN and the GCC, calling for closer coordination, regular dialogue and enhanced information sharing — particularly in areas such as conflict prevention, counter-terrorism and humanitarian response.

It has asked the UN Secretary-General to present practical recommendations on expanding this cooperation in an upcoming report.

The statement also highlighted the need for joint action on key challenges, including maritime, food and water security, and encouraged greater participation of women and young people in peace and security efforts.

The Council underscored the growing importance of regional organisations in addressing global challenges and reaffirmed its central role in maintaining international peace and security.
