A hospital in San Diego has disclosed the birth of the world's smallest baby ever to survive.

Weighing just 245 grams, the girl, nicknamed Saybie by hospital staff, was born 23 weeks and three days into her mother's pregnancy.

Her parents were then advised their baby may not survive the first 24 hours.

But Saybie has defied expectations and after spending nearly five months in the neonatal intensive care unit has now gone home weighing 2kg.

Her ranking as the world’s smallest baby ever to survive is according to the Tiniest Baby registry maintained by the University of Iowa.
