Hong Kong International Airport suspended check-in operations for a second day after protesters blocked the gates to the security and immigration areas.

Footage on social media showed protesters using luggage trolleys as barriers to block passengers from entering the departure terminal.

"Terminal operations at Hong Kong International Airport have been seriously disrupted as a result of the public assembly at the airport today," the Airport Authority (AA) said in a statement.

Just hours earlier, the city's leader Carrie Lam said the violent protests had pushed Hong Kong into "a state of panic and chaos".
