At least six people have been killed after gunmen targetted their vehicle in eastern Afghanistan.

The head of a Japanese aid agency, who was recently granted honorary Afghan citizenship for decades of humanitarian work in the east of the country, was among the dead, officials added.

The police have launched a search operation for the gunmen who fled the scene after the attack.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

It comes a week after a grenade attack on a UN vehicle in Kabul.
