China dismisses report of talks with Venezuela opposition as 'fake'

Federico PARRA / AFP

China on Wednesday called a newspaper report that claimed its diplomats had held talks with Venezuela's political opposition as "fake news".

The Wall Street Journal said the Chinese diplomats held talks with representatives of Juan Guaido in Washington in a bid to protect its investments in the Latin American country.

Setting the record straight, the spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said the "report is false" and reiterated their previous stance that Venezuela's "affairs" should be resolved via dialogue.

Venezuela has been stuck in political limbo after Guaido invoked a constitutional provision to assume the presidency, arguing that President Nicolas Maduro's re-election last year was a sham.
