One person has died near Adelaide while 23 firefighters have been injured as they battle more than 100 bushfires.
There are warnings of "catastrophic" conditions as strong winds and temperature continue to rise in New South Wales.
Authorities have warned that they will not be able to help everyone and several highways have been closed.
Around 7.4 million acres of land has burned across the country because of the bushfires which has also killed nine people so far.
Meanwhile, holiday-makers travelling to the southern part of Australia for Christmas are being urged to postpone their trips at least for 24 hours.
