Australia battles cyclone, torrential rain after deadly bushfires

PETER PARKS / AFP

Australia has been experiencing wild weather over the last week that has alternately brought heavy rainfall, flash floods and dry air.

The state's Bureau of Meteorology warned of heavy "rainfall and flash-flooding" in the state of New South Wales and Queensland after it experienced record rainfall for a third day in a row.

It comes as severe fire danger has been forecast for several districts on the western parts, with temperatures in the Eucla district hitting highs of 42 Celsius.

Meanwhile, the state's upper parts are dealing with the aftermath of a tropical cyclone Damien that made a landfall on Saturday afternoon, bringing gusty winds of up to 200 kmph.

No immediate damages were reported and the cyclone was expected to weaken as it moved inland.
