The Arab Parliament has welcomed the holding of direct municipal elections in Somalia, considered to be the first in the country since 1969.
Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yamahi, President of the Arab Parliament, described the elections as a pivotal step in the course of building state institutions, strengthening democracy and citizenship, and expanding the base of popular participation.
Al Yamahi added that the elections would contribute to Somalia's efforts in achieving security and stability, stressing on the need for all political forces to unite in prioritising supreme national interest.
Al Yamahi also reaffirmed the Arab Parliament’s full support for all efforts that contribute to the development and prosperity of Somalia.
