UAE unveils AED 170 billion road, transport plan to ease traffic

WAM

The UAE has announced a AED 170 billion package of national transport and road projects to be completed by 2030, aimed at easing congestion and improving mobility across the country.

The announcement was made by Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, during the UAE Government Annual Meetings in Abu Dhabi.

He said the plan is part of a national strategy to upgrade major highways, expand public transport, and develop high-speed and light rail systems in line with the country’s growth and sustainability goals.

Over the next five years, the ministry aims to boost the efficiency of federal roads by 73 per cent, widening several major routes — including Etihad Road, Emirates Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road — to increase capacity and cut travel times.

The ministry is also studying the construction of a new 120 km federal highway with 12 lanes to handle up to 360,000 trips a day.

Al Mazrouei added that Etihad Rail’s passenger service remains on track to launch by 2026, further improving connectivity and reducing congestion nationwide.
