Emergency crew from the UAE have departed to Afghanistan to carry out search and relief operations after a deadly earthquake struck eastern parts of the country.
It follows the directives of UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Teams from the UAE Search and Rescue and the Joint Operations Command will coordinate with the local authorities in Afghanistan to conduct field assessments to carry out the proper response needed.
The team will also provide logistical and relief support to affected areas, and rescue survivors trapped under the rubble.
The UAE team's efforts coincide with the Emirates Red Crescent's dispatch of urgent humanitarian aid, including essential relief supplies, medical supplies and shelter tents. The aid aims to support those affected, wounded and injured, and mitigate the impact of the disaster on the affected families.
So far, the earthquakes have left at least 1,400 dead and over 3,000 people injured.
The UAE welcomed the start of 2026 with large-scale fireworks and light shows across the country, drawing crowds of residents and visitors to major landmarks and public spaces.
