The UAE-sponsored UN Women Peace and Security Training Programme has been renamed the 'Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Women Peace and Security Initiative'.

Under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, the programme was established in September 2018.

It was set up to build and develop women's capabilities in the military and peacekeeping sectors.

223 women from 11 African, Asian and Arab countries have been taking part in the latest training this year.

The landmark programme is sponsored by the UAE government and hosted by the Khawla bint Al Azwar Military School in Abu Dhabi.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, praised the decision to rename the initiative and noted the UAE's unwavering support for establishing security and peace around the world.

Noura Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GWU, said "It is an immense honour for this pioneering training programme to carry Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak’s name."
