The start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended till April 15 as a precautionary measure against COVID-19.

The decision to postpone the Twenty20 tournament, which was scheduled to start on March 29, was taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

It came after the Delhi state government suspended all the matches of this year's IPL in the national capital.

"The BCCI is concerned and sensitive about all its stakeholders, and public health in general, and it is taking all necessary steps to ensure that, all people related to IPL, including fans have a safe cricketing experience," the board said in a statement.

BCCI officials are set to meet the IPL team owners on Saturday to discuss the way forward. The IPL's governing council meeting will also be held the same day.
