Snowden hopes France will grant him asylum

Whistleblower Edward Snowden hopes France will grant him asylum.

During an interview with a French radio station, Snowden says he would "love to see" President Emmanuel Macron make a gesture enabling him to live in the country.

It was not immediately clear when or where the interview took place.

Snowden has been living in Russia since revealing details of surveillance programmes run by US Intelligence.

"The saddest thing of this whole story is that the only place an American whistleblower has the chance to be heard is not in Europe but here (in Russia)," Snowden told France Inter radio.

The interview is set to be broadcast in its entirety on Monday.
