WhatsApp introduces cross-device messaging with synced messages

WhatsApp has addressed a long-standing issue by allowing the sending and receiving of synced messages across multiple devices.

The move comes as other messaging platforms have allowed users to log in on multiple devices for a while now, raising the question as to why WhatsApp hadn't done so already. However, the company has been hesitant due to its emphasis on heavy security with end-to-end encryption.

In the past, users have had to go through the hassle of verifying new devices and deactivating others, leading to the need for workarounds.

Last year, WhatsApp allowed users to log in on other devices, such as PCs, with their phones acting as hosts. Now, WhatsApp has officially launched the ability to use different phones with the same account at the same time.

According to WhatsApp, users can now link up to four additional devices other than the original device, presumably across both Android and iOS. These phones will connect to servers independently from each other, eliminating the need for the original device to be active. If the primary device is inactive for a long period of time, a failsafe mechanism will log out all companion devices.

To enhance the user experience, WhatsApp has also introduced a new login alternative. Users can enter their phone numbers to receive a one-time code, which will allow them to link extra devices.

WhatsApp has announced that the update is already being rolled out globally and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks. This move will likely be welcomed by users who have long-awaited the ability to use WhatsApp on multiple devices without the need for cumbersome workarounds.
