The Screen Actors Guild Awards were last night. These are acting awards all voted by actors. Netflix was the big winner, taking half of the TV awards, and three of the five big film awards. Winners include The Trial of the Chicago 7, which took Best Ensemble Cast, considered the biggest award of the night. “The Crown” won for Best Ensemble Cast in a TV drama, and “Schitt’s Creek” won Best Ensemble for a TV comedy. Chadwick Boseman won best actor for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His wife accepted the award. Big props to the Screen Actors Guild for keeping this all a secret, as they filmed all of these acceptance speeches on Zoom last week.
Thandie Newton is no longer Thandie Newton - but turns out she never was. The Emmy Award winning actress, known for her role on HBO’s “Westworld” tells British Vogue that the reason she has been using that first name is due to a typo in her first film credit, in a 1991 Nicole Kidman film called Flirting. Her actual name is Thandiwe Newton, and as she says, she’s “taking back what’s mine.”
Elon Musk has said that he sees his SpaceX company getting humans on Mars in the next five years, and one of them could be his girlfriend. Singer and artist Grimes, who also has a baby with Musk, says she wants to live out the rest of her life on Mars doing manual labor. She posted a picture last week on Instagram from Starbase, Texas, where SpaceX tests rockets. In the caption she said, “Ready to die with the red dirt of Mars beneath my feet.” She’s 33 now, so plenty of time to reconsider that decision before she turns 50.
